Westmorland and Furness Council has announced its participation in the Step Up to Social Work programme, a fully funded, fast-track training initiative designed to train the next generation of social workers.
The programme will equip aspiring social workers with the skills and qualifications needed to make a real difference in the lives of children and families.
The Step Up to Social Work programme, funded by the Department for Education, offers an intensive 14-month training route for talented graduates and career changers looking to move into social work. Participants will receive a tax-free bursary while they study, covering their training costs and supporting them as they work towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work—qualifying them to register as social workers upon completion.
Successful candidates will receive a guaranteed placement with Westmorland and Furness Council to develop their skills with real life, hands-on experience.
Cllr Janet Battye, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills at Westmorland and Furness Council, said: "We are thrilled to offer this life-changing opportunity to those who are passionate about making a difference to children and young people. “
“This programme will bring fresh talent into the sector and we know we will be able to support them in becoming skilled and compassionate professionals”
“As an experienced – and now retired – social worker, I know how interesting but demanding this job can be and it’s important that we recruit people from a variety of different backgrounds. Providing comprehensive, high quality training and continuing professional development is vital to encouraging the next generation of social workers to join and build their careers with us.”
The programme is open to individuals with a 2:2 degree or above in any subject, along with relevant experience working with children, young people, or families. The selection process is competitive, seeking individuals with the resilience, empathy, and dedication needed for a career in social work.
