Liverpool has made history by electing Joanne Anderson as the city’s new Mayor, becoming the first Black female to lead a major UK city.
As well as this, Ms Anderson becomes the first woman to take up the mayoral role in Liverpool.
Ms Anderson secured the most votes in the city-wide vote held on Thursday 6 May, being elected with 59.2% of the total after second preference votes were counted.
Commenting, Mayor of Liverpool, Joanne Anderson said: “I really want to show what an excellent job I can do for the city.
“The first thing I want to do is apologise to the city for what’s happened under the previous administration.
“I will do everything in my power to make it right, to make sure that we have an accountable, transparent local authority that the people of Liverpool deserve.
“I do, however, want to be hopeful about our future. We have so much opportunity ahead of us, particularly as we build the city that we want post-Covid.
“We need to build a city that looks after its people, that is fair and caring, that is transparent but also aspirational.”
Major civic buildings in Liverpool were lit up on the Saturday after the election to mark Ms Anderson’s achievement and she was officially sworn in to her role on 10 May.
