The Competition and Markets Authority has announced that a new Chief Operating Officer will join the organisation.
With the current Chief Operating Officer retiring, Daniel Lambauer will step into the role in October, taking on responsibility for overseeing a number of teams in the corporate services directorate. Alongside this, Lambauer will work alongside the Chief Executive to offer organisational leadership and make sure that the CMA is able to achieve its strategic objectives.
Lambauer is currently Executive Director at the National Audit Office, with his responsibility being on Strategy and Resources. This role sees Lambauer overseeing the NAO’s corporate services functions, but he does also act as Chief Information Officer and Senior Information Responsible Owner. He is also the Auditor General of Ireland, as well as being an external member of the Audit Committee of the Office of the Comptroller.
Before joining the NAO, he worked in a range of different sectors, with this including academia, the civil service, and management consultancy.

Speaking about his new role, Lambauer said:
“The CMA’s work is crucial in helping people to benefit from great choices and fair deals, enabling businesses to innovate and thrive in competitive markets, and making the UK economy productive and sustainable. I am delighted to be joining the CMA at an exciting time as its responsibilities grow, and I am looking forward to working alongside talented and committed colleagues.”
Subject to being appointed by the Secretary of State, Lambauer will be an executive member of the CMA Board, and will report directly to the Chief Executive. Commenting on the appointment, Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said:
“I warmly welcome Daniel into this role which is central to keeping the cogs turning on all the vital work we do for consumers and businesses. Daniel brings a wealth of experience which will benefit the CMA and I look forward to working closely with him.
“To welcome a great colleague, we say goodbye to another – I also want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Erik for all of his work, passion and dedication over the years.”
Incumbent COO Erik Wilson is retiring in October, having held the role since 2020 and being an Executive Director at the organisation before that. In the CMA’s previous form, the Office of Fair Trading, Wilson covered a number of positions between 2006 and 2013.
