Lower limit for Scottish drink driving
The drink drive limit in Scotland will soon be lowered, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill has announced.
The limit will be reduced from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg per 100ml later this year. The Scottish Government now has the power to change this limit under the 2012 Scotland Act, which recently received Royal Assent.
MacAskill said: “The Scottish Government has long called for a reduction in the drink-driving limit to 50mg.
“We strongly believe that reducing the drink-driving limit will save lives, and evidence from acrossEuropeshows that alcohol-related road deaths drop dramatically where the limit has been reduced.”
Campaigners have welcomed the change, but suggest the best message is zero tolerance.
Sarah Fatica, general manager at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “A 50mg limit does still leave some level of confusion for the general public about what is safe.”
