Oldham Council to approve £306m investment strategy

Oldham Council are reportedly set to approve a new multi-million-pound investment strategy which would see the local authority deliver 2,000 new homes.

The council estimates the ‘Creating a Better Place’ strategy will unlock £306m of investment across Oldham, created through the building of 2,000 new homes in the town centre and the creation of 1,000 new jobs and 100 apprenticeship opportunities.

Council leader, Sean Fielding, said: “Since becoming leader of the council I have listened to what residents are saying about the future of the borough and have undertaken a detailed review of the evidence.

“I believe that this refocus of our plans will be revolutionary for Oldham, bringing jobs, homes and investment into our town centre. It will create a better place to work, live and visit.

“Oldham town centre is at the heart of our borough and the potential to create lasting change is immense. [Through this strategy] we can create a better place to secure the future of our town centre and ensure it thrives.”

The local authority’s strategy is set to build on Oldham’s recent town centre regeneration projects, which have included the redevelopment of the Old Town Hall, improving connectivity with the rest of the local region via the Metrolink tram network and the redevelopment of Oldham Leisure Centre and Parliament Square.

Devolution, restructuring and widespread service reform: from a journalist’s perspective, it’s never been a more exciting time to report on the public sector. That’s why I could not be more thrilled to be taking over the reins at PSE at this key juncture. There could not be a feature that more perfectly encapsulates this feeling of imminent change than the article James Palmer, mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has penned for us on p28. In it, he highlights... read more >
