Public sector figures prominent in Honours list

A number of high-profile figures from across the public sector have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Among them are former ombudsman Anthony Redmond, who chaired the Commission for Local Administration and has been knighted for his services to local government, and Professor Adrian Smith, director-general for knowledge and innovation at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, who has also received a knighthood.

Former permanent secretary at the Home Office, Sir David Normington, was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, and Bruce Robinson, former head of the Northern Ireland civil service, was made a Knight Commander under the same Order.

Companions of the Order include Legal Services Commission chief executive Carolyn Down, former chief executive of the Charity Commission for England and Wales Andrew Fleming, and Peter Unwin, a director-general at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Among those appointed CBE were former Yorkshire headteacher, Sheila Audsley, for services to local and national education, Wirral council children’s services director Howard Cooper for services to local government and Rochdale headteacher Allison Crompton, for services to local and national education.

In total, 997 people were recommended to The Queen for an award.
