City of York Council has announced that they have received an update on the status of the bids they submitted to receive funding from the government to support the levelling up of the city.
The council submitted bids for around £25 million of funding, including £10 million that would have supported the delivery off the Castle Gateway regeneration and £10 million for the Parliament Street, Coney Street and Riverside Quarter developments.
A bid of around £5 million was also submitted to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities that had the aim of enhancing the Haxby Railway station project. This would have improved the active travel links, as well as accessibility to the new station that would have benefitted the surrounding communities.
The Executive Member for Finance and Major Projects at City of York Council, Councillor Nigel Ayre, said:
“We continue to explore all possible options to deliver these ambitious projects, which would be transformational for the city.
“Our bids are seeking to attract investment to make major improvements to key city centre locations, to help us deliver world-class public space in the Castle Gateway area as well as open up a riverside walkway and make improvements to Coney Street. Whilst our second bid seeks to invest in active travel as part of our efforts to bring a station back to Haxby.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in these projects be it by engaging in public consultations to shape the plans or by assisting the development of the bids. This work has seen us submit the strongest proposals possible, which we hope the Government will recognise to help us accelerate the delivery of these hugely exciting and transformational projects.”
The council did submit a bid to the first round of funding, in 2021, however they were not successful. They did receive useful, positive feedback on the bid, with the government saying that it scored well across the main assessment criteria of strategic fit, value for money, and deliverability.
The results of the bidding process are expected to be announced later in the autumn.
