Out with old ASBOs and in with CBOs
Out with ASBOs and in with CBOs (Criminal Behaviour Orders). From today, as part of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, local authorities and police will be provided with more powers to deal with offenders.
Under the new CBOs there will be increased powers, banning offenders from aggressive begging, constant verbal abuse to neighbours and visiting specific places.
Police officers will also no longer have to receive council authorisation to introduce a dispersal order. Permission will be granted by a police inspector.
Home office minister Norman Baker appeared on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme saying that CBOs will “replace a system in disrepair”.
The new CBOs have been trialled in Manchester for the past 18 months, and a Home Office spokesperson confirmed five of the six CBO powers, excluding civil injunctions, have come into effect.
