GMWDA funds recycling projects
Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) has awarded £55,000 to seven community groups and charities for innovative work on waste and recycling projects. The funding will allow this work to continue, with the aim of Manchester achieving zero waste to landfill.
The projects have had a positive effect on the local communities as well as the environment. The schemes used a range of different techniques for recycling, including re-using furniture as well community upcycling (recycling that produces a higher-quality product than the original) and even waste art projects.
The schemes provided training for young people to develop valuable skills and supported adults with mental health problems to gain awareness of the importance of recycling and to get involved.
Councillor Neil Swannick, chair of GMWDA, said: “I am extremely pleased with the chosen projects, which all have a positive impact on the environment and local communities in Greater Manchester. The applications demonstrated that there is valuable work already being delivered by the community sector and we must keep supporting it, in order for it to develop its activity over the coming years.”
John Hastings from Recycle IT, one of the groups which received funding, said: “We are delighted to have received funding from GMWDA. We genuinely help bridge the digital
divide and facilitate low cost PC packages to people and organisations who can’t afford high street prices. This fund will really help us develop our re-use projects and support us to continue to look at new and inspirational ways to treat the broken down materials to aid further re-use and up-cycling.”
