One local government digital platform to rule them all?
Digital economy minister Ed Vaizey has, once again, expressed hope that the Government Digital Service could play a role in helping councils “go digital”.
The Conservative minister hasn’t ruled out the possibility of sharing a single digital platform for local government, despite Socitm saying that the idea should “not be attempted” last year.
At the time, the association for IT and digital leaders working in local public services, said the superficially attractive idea was “deeply flawed”.
However, when there is much confusion centred round the public sector, Vaizey has – to some degree – re-ignited the fire on this potential plan for the future.
“Obviously there’s an ambition potentially to have local government on one platform, because it’s all about how you transact with government and how we transact on the web,” he said. Whether this leads to anything is yet to be seen, but it is interesting to see that the idea is still being bounced around central government.
