Mid Sussex District Council celebrates cultural diversity
Mid Sussex District Council has helped to bring together local people from different cultural backgrounds for an event that celebrates the many diverse community groups in Mid Sussex.
The free Local Global event held on Saturday 6 March was a celebration of all cultures that make up the Mid Sussex community.
Local community groups, representing many different cultures, provided exotic flavours as part of a mouth-watering buffet. In the packed hall at Haywards Heath Methodist Church, the audience was taken around the world with cultural dances, songs and music performed by residents from the Philippines, South Africa, India and Kenya. The finale performance came from pupils of Halsford Park Primary School who sang four songs including, ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing’.
“Local Global is an event full of passion, pride and enthusiasm,” said Councillor Jane Keel, Chairman of Mid Sussex District Council. “With an array of vibrant colours on display, mysterious sights, sounds and tastes, Local Global is a truly unique experience. Everyone that took part had a great time and it was a pleasure to be part of such a wonderful event.”
Local Global was organised by Mid Sussex District Council, West Sussex County Council, the Councils for Voluntary Service, with support from local community groups and the Sussex Community Foundation.
“I really felt the different Mid Sussex communities came together as one community,” said Regina Choudhury, Project Worker for the Councils for Voluntary Service.
The event was also an opportunity to launch the Mid Sussex Diversity Forum, which has been set up as a platform to provide advice and information to support the different communities in Mid Sussex and to foster an appreciation of our rich diversity of cultures.
