Liverpool City Council sells 45% share in John Lennon Airport

Liverpool City Council have joint-sold a 45% share of Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport to investors.

Of the sold stake, 35% was originally property of Peel Group and the other 10% belonged to Liverpool City Council, a share which was only acquired in 2016.

New shareholders Ancala now have 45% of the major Liverpool airport – which saw over 5 million passengers making overseas journeys last year. That made it the UK’s 12th busiest airport.

Spence Clunie, senior partner at Ancala, said: "Transport infrastructure is a highly promising segment of the market, so we are delighted to be acquiring a stake on behalf of our investors in such a prestigious regional airport.”

The remaining 55% of ownership in the airport is still held by Peel and the Liverpool City Council, with the council still holding a 10% stake in the city’s transport hub.

Mayor Joe Anderson says the council made £19m from the sale its stake in Liverpool John Lennon Airport (JLA) - an enourmous increase from the £2m investment just three years ago.
