Nicola Sturgeon to become Scotland’s first female first minister
Scotland is set to have its first-ever female first minister after Nicola Sturgeon was confirmed as the only candidate to replace Alex Salmond as leader of the Scottish National Party.
Currently the deputy leader, Sturgeon is set to take over leadership at the party’s conference next month. She is expected to be elected first minister by the Scottish Parliament shortly after.
Sturgeon has served as Salmond’s deputy for the past seven years.
In her first remarks after the nominations closed this morning Sturgeon promised to govern for “all of Scotland” in the wake of the long and at times divisive independence campaign.
Sturgeon also announced a speaking tour of cities across Scotland to rally the thousands of new members who have joined the SNP since the referendum on 18 September.
When Sturgeon’s leadership was confirmed, Alex Salmond described his former deputy as “the outstanding politician of her generation in Scotland”.
